The goal of this project was to explore the process of designing a product from concept sketches and final drawings to the creation of a functional prototype, using plywood as the primary material. The task was to design a bookshelf tailored to kindergarten-aged children, ensuring it could be constructed from 1/2-inch thick flat material. Success was measured by the design’s ability to meet the specific needs of young users, the depth of design exploration, and the quality of craftsmanship in final model.
REFLECTION:
This was my first project working with actual wood, specifically 1/2-inch plywood, and it provided a hands-on opportunity to explore materiality and craftsmanship. My initial sketches focused on creating a playful, safe design with rounded corners, ideal for a bedroom or playroom. The concept aimed to balance functionality and child safety while making the bookshelf visually appealing. As I moved from design to prototype, I gained valuable experience using tools like the band saw, table saw, and sanding machines. I also learned finishing techniques such as staining, which gave the final model a polished, durable finish. This project significantly enhanced my woodworking skills and understanding of material properties.
